People By the Side of the Road
It was in the fall of 2005 that I had the weirdest experience I've ever had. I'm not a believer in the supernatural, but after this happened I am quite willing to give it a bit more credence.
I was driving back through Maine heading back to Massachusetts on a little-known route over to the Massachusetts Turnpike; the road connects all the way up to near the Bangor area. It was in mid-October sometime; the dates I can't be so specific about. It was the middle of the night practically, around 11 or so, as I hadn't set off from my friend's place until about 7 or 8 p.m., after dinner.
I was driving along the long, winding two-lane pitch dark road when up ahead of me in my headlights I saw something there right by the side of the road - it was unmistakable. There on my right, way up ahead, were three or so people all dressed in black like Mennonites in a weirdly active pose at the roadside, one of which was wearing a wide brimmed round-topped pastor's hat with a weird, old gaunt face and longish hair. I could see the group in black coats there fairly well from the distance.
I was probably doing about 45 or 50 miles per hour and as I came up upon them (within about 1,000 or so feet), shining the figures in my headlights, they were now going almost completely transparent right before my eyes in the light and fading away as I had to blink a few times, trying to figure out what I was seeing up ahead. I couldn't figure it out as I slowed a little (not much) and quickly came up and quickly swooshed on by whatever it was taking a quick look over to my right as there now was nobody there at all, no one as I passed - just the flash of the silver of the guardrail and some pine trees up a hillside slope.
It was too weird. I suddenly got this sense of fright jolting up through me as I then sped up again and kept on driving as I knew for certain that there were people there. I swear to you, and I mean it, there were people there, but absolutely no one as I came up closer to them. I wasn't tired or falling asleep any, there were actual people by that road that just disappeared right before my eyes.
