Spirit Reader
by Katharine

This happened to me two years ago, and I still have no good explanation for it. I live in a small city called Shoreline, just outside of Seattle. In the nearby town of Lake Forest Park there is a little mall with a bookstore and grocery store. It is not very big at all, and since it was late in the day, not very busy.

I was coming out of the bookstore, walking along the covered sidewalk, and I saw a woman leaning up against one of the supporting columns reading a book. She looked like she was in her mid-twenties with short, light hair a big bag hanging on her arm. Something was odd about her, but I can't pinpoint it. I thought it was weird place to stand and read, but I figured she must be waiting for a ride. The parking lot was pretty empty and there were no other people around.

Not wanting to startle her out of her reading by walking in front of her, I decided to walk behind the column she was leaning against. It was only about two feet wide, but by the time I got around it she was gone. I stopped and looked around for her. No car had come. I saw no sign of her walking away, and since there was open space around us, I would have. And I was standing between her and the only nearby store she could have gone into. She just wasn't there. Not all spirits are ghosts.
