Brick House Full of Ghosts
by Chris
We live in a 150-year-old, single-story, brick house in a small southern NSW town in Australia called Corowa and have done for about 18 years now. It's a lovely, rambling old place with high ceilings and was built in three sections. The first section was built in 1959 when the area was recently founded. The man who built it was a Scotsman who bred Clydesdales. The second section was built in the 1870s and that's where the pressed metal ceiling and leadlight windows came from. The third section was built in the early 1900s.
When we moved in in 1990, we at first took the various noises at all times of the day to be standard for an old place, but after a while started to discern that there were differences that we couldn't quite put in a pigeonhole, like floorboards and doors and other stuff. What started to put things into a whole new perspective was about two years after we moved in, was a photo we took of the house from the front during winter with our youngest son Ethan, aged about 6 at the time, who was holding the dog. When we developed the photo, we saw a diamond-shaped light behind Ethan with a man and a young woman in a bonnet in the diamond, about head height off the ground under the verandah looking at us. We took the negative to a professional photographer friend, who developed the photo and he asked us who the people were. He examined the film and negative and couldn't explain the anomaly.
One time we heard two kids arguing about a rocking horse. A boy shouting at the girl telling her it was down at the blacksmiths (there is no blacksmiths anymore) being repaired and she didn't believe him. We went into our eldest son Daniel's room, who at that time was about 11, and there was no one there, but the argument kept going and we followed it around the house as the two kids kept yelling at each other.
Another time, a friend came to the house and asked who the little girl in the white pinafore sitting on a branch in the tree outside the window was. Yet another time, Daniel went to the bathroom about 3 a.m. and turned around to find a woman in her 20s in a leaf green dress with buttons all up the front to the neck and wearing buttoned shoes staring at him. She just smiled and turned and walked into our music room, which is a dead end room, and just disappeared.
We've also got a photo of the little girl standing in the doorway to Daniel's room, watching him. We've seen a little boy in knickerbockers running around the house and have seen the man in reflections in the windows and actually felt and smelt the young lady walk into our bedroom and stand next to me one Saturday morning.
It's become commonplace over the years and they don't cause any real trouble, except the kids get up to mischief when we have visitors staying over by tickling them in bed and giggling. The only time they did something 'wrong' was unlock and open all the doors in the house, even ones we had no keys to when we went overseas. We assumed they were annoyed with us going away. We got keys made and locked the doors and they opened them again just to show us their displeasure perhaps. Who knows?
We don't see or here much from them anymore, not for the last couple of years, but every now and then they'll open a door and walk past you or turn the lights on. It's been pretty fun having four ghosts or spirits in the house. I always wonder what a burglar would encounter if he tried to break in.
