Anna
Jennings' Ghost

I bought a house in 1993. One and a half stories, bath and a half complete with claw-foot tub, three bedrooms, den, living room with fireplace. And Anna Jennings, whose doctor husband had the house she loves built for their retirement in 1921.
She passed away in 1951 - in her room at home. It is now my den.
She's not shy, she laughs like a trucker at a ribald joke, she has opinions on wall paint colors(!), she has a great sense of humor and on the rare occasion she cries, it would break your heart. But it was the day I became angry with her that I lost my eyebrows in my hair line and bruised my big toe with my rather formidable jaw line!
I had an older dog who was literally my shadow and, without a doubt, my would-be protector unto her death if needed. But her health was declining and she was on heart medication at the age of 14. On this particular day, I was tidying the front room when I heard the dog growling next to me. Her head and tail were down and she was looking straight in front of her with me directly behind her. She kept growling and started backing up, so I backed up and this continued out of the front room, into the hall and almost to the bathroom door. Honestly, it took me this long it figure out what was going on. Anna had never bothered the dog before, and when I realized she was walking toward us just to tease that old dog, I let loose with a tirade that would have set that old woman's crinolines on fire!
I put the dog out, ranted and raved to the house in general for a bit more, then realizing how I might look to someone else I started laughing and sat down in the middle of the stairs where I'd ended up at that point. I was shaking my head at myself, looking down and when I looked up - well, it was a good thing I was sitting down. Anna Jennings was standing at the bottom of the stairs. Not misty, not dim or vague around the edges. She was standing there as big as life. Then she was gone.
