The Spook
Light
by Teresa N.
I believe it would have been the Summer of 1968 when I saw the spook light. We had moved to Web City and an friend told my dad about it. So we decided to go see it. We actually visited the light several times, but the most memorable time was when we took my aunt, uncle and cousins to see it. We were all piled into and old station wagon. It was a good night to go see it because it was kind of overcast and the moon was not bright. All the way there, my sister and I told our stories of seeing the light to our cousins. By the time we arrived, we already had ourselves scared. We drove slowly down the road turning off our lights as to not "scare" the light off. After driving down the road, we picked a spot were we could see down the road a little ways. On the peak of a small hill. We all got out of the car and went to sit on the hood of the car. Nothing happened for a while. So we just visited quietly.
After a while our brave fathers decided to walk down the road toward where the light usually came from. Of course, they ignored all of us pleading, "Don't Go!" they went anyway. Our mothers stayed with us by the car. We could barely see them as they walked away. They went out of site for a short while when they went down the hill. Then we could see them on the top of the next hill down the road. Then we saw the light! It seemed to bob and weave as we watched it. It was moving toward us! It grew brighter and bigger as it came. We all started yelling for our dads, but were quickly silenced by our mothers. Then we jumped into the car and peeked over the seats and watched it as it continued coming. It would disappear then reappear a little closer. To our begging, our mothers joined us in the car. We watched as it continued to come even closer. Now we could see the outlines of our dads in front to the light. It was still a little ways away from them, but still coming and it seemed to be bigger. Then it was right in front of our dads. We were terrified! Then it disappeared for a second and reappeared between them and us. We screeched! It came quite close to us then disappeared just for seconds and reappeared down the road behind us, then it disappeared.
We looked back down the road to find our fathers walking toward us. We decided, from fear I am sure, just to wait for them in the car. As soon as they got in, the excitement started again. They told us how it felt like they could have just reached out and touched it. And that they too got a little nervous. We sat there a little longer to see if it would come back, but it didn't, so we went home. We talked about it all the way home. We went to see the light several times, sometimes with no luck, sometimes we could see far away, but this was the only time I ever saw it that close. It was many years ago, but I enjoy remembering the fun we had that night. Now I tell my 12 year old about it and he wants to go see it some day. I hope I will be able to do that just to carry on the family stories if nothing else. Although it was scary, it was awesome too. I have no idea what it is, nor do I ever wish to know. It is a wonderful mystery and I am glad to have seen it.
