Strange Creature
in New Jersey

I live in Bergen County, north New Jersey. You never hear about this creature in this area, but there is one here. I don’t know if it's the Jersey Devil, but it sure has many of the characteristics of one.
When I was 13 years old (I am 38 now), I was in the kitchen and it was a summer night. The sky had just become dark. My mother was giving my brother a haircut in the other room. I was alone in the kitchen. I heard a strange high-pitched squeal outside the kitchen door. I felt the hair on the back of my neck stand up. It was not a sound I ever heard before.
I went to the side door and went outside. There on the pavement was a creature that stood about 3½ feet tall. It was fat, furry, brown in color and stood up on its two hind legs and had short front paws. It had red swirling eyes that were totally hypnotic. It had a wide mouth filled with sharp teeth that went straight across its face. I froze in full terror. I had the feeling that this thing could move extremely fast and it was going to tear me to pieces. Although I was in a frozen state of panic, I managed to open that door and ran screaming into the house. Of course it was gone by the time my family came out to see it. I never saw it again.
However, I had told my older sister, who is 15 years older than me, about this. She claims that when she was four years old and playing in the basement of this same home, she also encountered a similar creature. We sat around the table and agreed to draw what each other saw in private. When we turned the pictures around, we had both drawn the same thing.
This was all there was to this story, until about a year ago. After all those years I now still live in the same house, but with my daughter now. My daughter has been telling me she has been hearing a strange sound outside her window on and off for a little over a year. I thought she was making it up because of my story perhaps. Then one night last year I was up late (1:30 a.m.) and she came to my room and said, "I hear it, mom. Come to my room!" Sure enough, I heard it too. It had that same weird sound that I heard years ago, but this time slightly different. I couldn't see anything, but I stood by the window for over a half hour that night listening in shock to this creature. I could only explain the sound as a scream that was unearthly and bone chilling. A sound something like screeching metal and animals dying combined. But it was unnaturally loud as if it was amplified! I don't know any other way to explain it. We both heard it and haven't heard it since that night.
