Crying Babies
by K.C.

When I was 14, I went to bed early with a migraine headache. Earlier in the evening, I had overheard my guardian say she was going to babysit her newborn nephew. He was about two months old. I slept with my window open because it was springtime and the air felt good.

I woke up about 12:30 to the sound of a baby crying. I got up and walked through the living room, down the hallway and into my guardians bedroom looking for the baby. There was no one awake in the room. I turned on the light to see the baby and get him before he woke up anyone else. Well, there was no one in the room except my guardian and me. I turned off the light and walked back down the hall. Once again, I heard a baby crying. I searched the entire house. NO BABY IN THE HOUSE AT ALL!!!!!

I went back to bed and spent a restless night wondering about what I had heard. The next morning at breakfast I found out that her nephew had not come over to stay because her brother had to work late. They canceled their plans for a night out. I told my guardian about hearing the babies crying and that's when she told me about a house fire that had happened where our house had been built. It seems that some grandparents were watching their grandchildren so mom and dad could have a night out when the house caught fire. The grandparents were able to get out with only one child, the baby died. I still believe this baby was the baby I heard crying that night.
