Lights in the Barn
by Clementine

My barn is padlocked from within at night. Locks are hanging open in the morning, but padlocks are still through the lock mechanism, effectively barring the door from being opened from outdoors. (No sign of entry anywhere else.)

The ceiling main water valve was open one night and flooded our barn all night. The valve had been tested in the summer, so we knew it had running water. The valve isn’t used, as it is incomplete and the pipe ends a few feet after the valve and is not closed at the end. The valve had been turned on and was running one morning, yet it had not been broken. We shut it off and the water stopped. (One would have needed a ladder of some kind to reach it, also. No ladder was nearby.)

In the middle of the night, our bedroom ceiling lights just turned on by themselves while we were in bed. (We live in a converted loft above our barn. Horses are living in the barn.)

When I went to close the garage door in our barn one night, I heard a loud wailing moan from above the door. For a second, I truly thought a woman’s body was going to drop from the garage door as it came down. It was a blood-curdling sound. Truly the scariest phenomenon to date. My heart was pounding!

I sometimes hear music, but can’t tell where it’s coming from. We live on a farm far from neighbors. The only explanation is music echoing from down the road, but it’s always at night and very distant. I can’t tell from what direction it’s coming.

The most surprising phenomena, but strangely not scary, are the "flying lights" in the barn at night when all the lights are off. Only I see these, although my husband has heard the moans, seen the lights switch on, witnessed the valve being left opened. The first time the lights were intermittently flashing across the walls, moving around the barn, counter-clockwise, kind of like a flashlight passing over windows from outside, and creating an intermittent flash of lights moving down the interior barn walls. The weird thing was, there was nobody outside; I looked.

The lights went horizontally around the interior of the barn, including on the walls where the front windows were located, so it would have had to be a light aimed at the barn going around the whole barn in a counter-clockwise direction, and it was traveling quickly. Since our barn is huge, it would have had to be a helicopter circling our barn that fast. I was standing there in the dark turning, around on the spot, watching these lights zip around, and I was wondering, “What the hell is going on?” I tried to explain it to myself as I watched, ruling out a passing car or flashlight, as the lights weren’t behaving in a fashion that could be explained by a car or a flashlight, as it was zooming 360 degrees around the structure. These lights lasted several minutes. I saw them again when I came back inside from checking outdoors for an explanation. I found none.

The second time I witnessed the lights was a few weeks ago. Again, the barn lights were off, it was night time, and I saw the lights zip in a counter-clockwise direction again, but they lasted a shorter time this time. Then a light started travelling in my peripheral vision in the direction of my eye movements, but only when I stood in front of my filly’s stall and swept my eyes past her stall. I stood there repeating this about 25 times, and it kept happening. I tried to test my eyes for fatigue, but the lights only occurred as I described. If I looked elsewhere, nothing happened. My eyes were not playing any tricks on me and were not feeling fatigued or sensitive to light. Then, when I swept my eyes from the ground upwards toward her stall window, the light traveled from my feet upward in a spiral, through her stall and out her closed window. The light was white and had a disappearing tail trailing it. When I moved my eyes from her stall to the ground, the light spiraled through her stall and disappeared as it swept past the ground at my feet. This kept happening every time I moved my eyes like this. Luna, my filly, was not scared or acting nervous, so I figure I was hallucinating or maybe it was her doing it! (This filly was rescued from an owner who left her in a stall her whole life and allowed her to atrophy. We rescued her this summer.) However, the weird things (lights, valves, locks, etc.) happened prior to her arrival.

After the second "lights" episode, I went upstairs to ask my husband to come downstairs and tell me if he could see them. He couldn’t see them, but neither could I. They were gone! I must say, I’m not sure about this place yet. I do not feel threatened or scared. Just curious as to “what’s going on around here!”
