Gray Lady Scottish Ghost
by Susan

I was traveling at age 21 with my mother and father in Scotland. One hotel we stayed at outside Edinburgh was a formal old manor house. I met up with some Air Force pilots who were staying for an air show and ended up spending our stay there with them along the the girl who worked the front desk. All of us had a wonderful time. The last night we stayed up talking until about 4 a.m., then said our goodbyes. I headed up the stairs. The first flight was reminiscent of a scene from "Gone with the Wind," wide, stately wooden stairs and lit by candlelight. From that floor it broke off into two small stair wells leading the third floor. These were closed off by doors at top and bottom.

It was early summer and the hotel was not air conditioned. It was quite toasty throughout the building, especially the higher you went. I entered the stairwell to the third floor where our room was, door shut behind me. Halfway up the stairs, the room turned bone-chilling cold. I could see my breath. I stopped. Suddenly, I felt someone physically pass through me although I was alone. I could smell a strong scent of perfume. It was a mix of musk and flowers. A deep wave of sorrow and loneliness came over me. I spoke out loud and said, "I know how you feel. I've lost someone I loved dearly too." With that I ran up the stairs and woke up my mother. She threw on her robe and came out to see if she could experience what I had. But by then the temperature was back to being steamy warm, and the the smell of perfume was gone.

When we checked out the following morning, I asked if the hotel was haunted. The manager said "Indeed it is. The Grey Lady haunts the hotel. She was the lover of Bonnie Prince Charles. He, however, left to join forces with Napoleon. He never returned and in fact eventually married a woman he met in London. She died of a broken heart and still walks the halls waiting for him." I inquired how you would know if you met up with her. He said "a few have seen her, but most account are of cold spots and smelling her perfume." I was 21 at the time and this was my first interaction with a ghost. It wasn't frightening at all. I was amazed how her passing through I could sense all her feelings.
