Phantom Band
by Mike C.

Upon completion from college, a group of couples and friends decided to rent a house while pondering and searching for careers in our respective fields. As any recent graduate knows, with all the student loans money is very tight upon graduation. We pooled our resources and actually rented an old school house that was being converted into a bed and breakfast in a small town called Magnolia, Iowa. The building itself was nothing spectacular, but the rooms were very big and everyone had a lot of privacy.

Almost immediately things started to attract our attention. Lights would continually blink on and off, doors would slam and open at all hours of the night, and most peculiar of all is that at any hour of the day loud distorted music would blast through out the old gymnasium and through all three stories of the school. On this point all 15 of us could agree. At first we blamed the neighborhood kids with their loud ghetto-blasters and car radios, but we could never catch anyone in the act.

The music started to wear on everyone's nerves and finally we contacted the owner to complain. It was then the owner said the most amazing thing. To quote the owner, "We we never could get that damned band to turn down their amplifiers." We were all in agreement that some local band had found another way into the building. (Being an old three-story school with a gym and several sub basements, some having been closed off at different times, this made sense.)

We decided we would catch the culprits and put an end to the racket. We waited until Saturday night when everyone would be at the school. We had everyone invite several friends and made a party/game of it. When the music would start, teams would move toward the sound with flashlights in hand to catch the little buggers. This went on for over 45 minutes and everyone (about 25 people) had all descended past the old locker rooms of the gym to an area that had been boarded off. The music was so loud the boards were vibrating.

We chose to use a SawsAll for maximum speed and quickly cut through the wood and instantly there were four or five flashlights beaming into a empty, dusty auditorium. Then complete silence. All the friends and invited guests laughed and clapped and gloated in what they assumed was some form of trick on our part. We tenants were stunned and within two weeks were giving regular Saturday night tours to catch the phantom band.
