The Phantom Patrol
by Luis

This happened around 20 years ago. At the time, I was visiting my parents who lived out in the open country. Their house was part of a farm labor camp that was surrounded by agriculture. I was in the back yard doing something when I noticed way in the distance a straight dark line not too high off the ground, moving in a easterly direction. As it moved it would fluctuate along its length, rising and dipping, but still maintaining a low altitude. I was puzzled.

Then I realized what it was. It was a bunch of planes, big planes, that were flying in single file formation. But what were they doing out here and why were they flying so low? I mean they couldn't have been more than a hundred feet off the ground! The only planes you get out here are the occasional lonely crop duster and that's about it. These planes looked like some of the bombers of World War Two. When I first noticed them I was observing them edge on, that's why they gave the appearance of a solid straight line.

As far as I could tell, there were 10 planes. Suddenly, the plane in the lead made a turn, banking to the right, the others followed suit. Now they were heading in my direction, coming toward me! I was all excited. I was going to see them up close! As they approached, I looked around to see if anybody else was seeing this. I saw nobody. I called out to my parents to come out and watch. I don't know if they heard me or not, but it didn't matter. The first plane was almost above our house, its prop engines drowning out my voice. It banked to the right again right above the house.

Here I could clearly see everything. There were no insignias or symbols, just some numbers on the side of the fuselage. Each following plane made the same right turn maneuver above my parents' house. They also created a big old tail wind. My mom's laundry was flapping away and my hair was blowing like crazy! These were definite vintage relics of a bygone aviation era. One was all chromed out and looked like the bomber that dropped the atomic bomb.

I was jumping up and down, yelling and waving. And here's the clincher... I didn't see any pilots whatsoever in any of those planes. I could see the controls in the cockpits but no pilots! After this realization started to sink in, I began to get scared. How can that be? The last plane flew overhead and the whole formation continued in its new course. I watched them until they were a good distance away when they made yet another right turn.

As they began to fade away in the horizon, my father came out just in time to catch a glimpse before they completely disappeared from sight. I told him everything except about seeing no pilots. That was later on. I'll never forget that day as long as I live. The day I saw the lost patrol. Where did they come from, what does it mean? I don't know.
