The Old Man and the Old Hag
by Rick B.

I found myself in a detoxification center about 15 years ago as a result of a divorce. I found it easier to handle life's problems by imbibing a bit too much. Anyway, on my last night there, a new patient arrived and spent the evening espousing his life as an addict. He related, among other things, how he had had the "good fortune" to experience first hand the water hose treatment. He said that in the sanitarium it was a common practice to help rid you of your demons. He eventually turned to talk of black magic and "real" demons. The whole experience was unnerving as he continued to make eye contact with me as if I was the only one in the room and there were more then five of us at the table.

After a full night of his never-ending commentary, I was more then ready for my upcoming departure the following day. I went to my bed which was situated at the far end of the room. All of the beds were separated by curtains. I had the standard curtain on my one side and to the other was the coat rack by the wall. As I lay there on my left side facing the curtain, I had a very unpleasant feeling, as if I was being watched. I rolled over onto my back and there was an old hag dressed completely in a black flowing fabric. I did not see a face as it was covered by a similar veil. She was right in my face, and my first reaction was to kick out at her. I felt my feet make contact and I sent her into the coat rack. The next instant, she was gone. I arose to use the restroom when I noticed that it was 3 a.m. That old man was sitting in a chair by the bathroom door just staring at me with a wicked smile on his equally wicked face.
