Brownies of the Woods
by Patrick B.

This event had occurred in June about three years ago when I was a manager of a youth residential camp in eastern Ohio. One evening, my camp naturalist led a sizable group of 9 - 12 year olds on a night hike. The hike went great with typical night hike activities occurring. Quickly, a storm came upon them with lightning and thunder which scared the children. The naturalist divided the kids into two groups to be led back down the wooded trail to the main camp. He led one group while a counselor led another group.

It is the journey on the trail back to the camp that gets interesting. While leading the kids down the trail, the naturalist said the kids kept saying things about there being little people in the woods around them. He did not see anything, but the scared kids did. One would think that the lightning flashes were causing them to see shadows in the trees. The naturalists group made it back to the camp and met up with the counselors group, which had gotten back before them. The counselor asked the naturalist about the little people who were in the woods along the trail. He said that they looked like regular people, but were little. He said that he saw one in the trail in front of him and thinking it was a kid from his group reached out to pull it back into the line behind him, but couldn't because his hand went through it.

When I was first told of this, I thought that lightning flashes were making them see things, but the two groups separately saw the same thing. One of my other camp staff suggested that they might be "brownies." Brownies are small people that are seen in an area not to far from the camp when people sometimes get to scared or excited. It was suggested that the scared state causes these little people to become visible because of the change in our body vibrations.

I have been on that trail many time over several years under many conditions, but have never seen anything that would remotely resemble what the kids saw that night. I would like to know if anyone else had other similar experiences or could share information about what was experienced that night.
