Magic
Pitchfork
by Jim D.
I have an interesting story that you may like, although it's not related to ghosts, it certainly is a bizarre coincidence.
I was living at home with my parents and was quite bored of it. As I was drifting asleep one night, I started visualizing how nice it would be to put in a community garden in the back of my parents' house. The area I lived in was a seasonal beach area in New England, it had its share of poor people, whom I thought would benefit from this sort of garden. I'm not sure why I was suddenly so into the idea, but I really got into imagining the layout of the gardens, possible public funding, types of vegetables to grow, etc. Eventually, I fell asleep with these ideas still flowing around my brain.
The next afternoon I was still thinking about the garden, but thought it would be better to start off small... all I needed was a pitchfork . I wanted to make a small vegetable garden in the backyard, but didn't have the proper tools. I asked my mother if she could lend me the money for this tool. She laid into me about saving my money for paying off college loans and we had a big fight.
After the big argument, I decided to blow off steam and went for a walk in the woods where I envisioned this community garden. It was fall and the leaves were cracking under my feet... really a beautiful day. Well, the air started to feel all static and the colors in the woods, the trees, everything... started getting this magical feel to it. This one tree in particular caught my eye. I started walking toward it, and the hair on my arms stood up. I took a few steps closer and there, leaning against this tree, was a pitchfork!
Now, I'm not a particularly religious person , but this was the closest I have come to God or something. There is no way anyone could have known that I was going for this walk, I announced it directly to my mom I was going out a few moments after our argument. After the initial shock wore off, finding this pitchfork, I decided it was meant for me and took it excitedly to show my mom. All mom had to say was, "Oh yeah, there were some kids out there a few weeks ago digging around the stream." Well, I didn't know this!
I used the pitchfork to start my garden and gave up after a few laborious forkfuls. I then hired a man with a rototiller to finish the plot. I never did get around to the community garden, but I still have the pitchfork and may have it bronzed someday!
