I was never much interested in the spiritual side of things, having been raised basically in an agnostic household. I had an affinity for Taoism, if I thought there was anything, it was the flow of nature through everything and all of us, not one thing being of more consequence: a person, a blade of grass, etc. This is what makes my two experiences with angels most remarkable. I did not call for them, had never contemplated their existence, yet the two "visitations" were vivid, powerful events that I have no doubt actually happened. In fact, I can feel it as if it were yesterday.
About nine years ago, I was at a very low spot in life: isolated in a new city, ill for two years from a "mystery" virus that had caused me neurological damage and extreme exhaustion, a toddler who was much more powerful emotionally and physically than I was, and a dear, dedicated hardworking husband who left the house at 6 a.m. for work and returned at 11 p.m. when his university night classes ended. Exhausted, alone, I often felt that I could not carry on. Standing in my kitchen one morning, slumped over with unbearable fatigue due to this longstanding illness, I bleakly contemplated the exhausting walk to the daycare to retrieve a hyperactive child, and wondered how I would make that walk let alone get through the rest of the day. Suddenly, I felt a presence behind me. Powerful, benevolent. I had suffered an assault from behind earlier in life which left me extremely jumpy and in fact with post traumatic stress syndrome. Far from jumping with fright, I felt immediate calm and strength when the "being" placed a long, comforting hand in the center of my back and left it there for a few seconds. I felt much cheered and greatly revitalized. I just stood there with quiet joy, sensing that the being behind me (although I never laid eyes on it) was exceedingly slender and very tall (about seven feet), but the sense of extreme height may have been due to the fact that his (I feel it was a he) feet were not touching the ground, that he floated slightly above me. I had the sensation he was dark-skinned, dark and majestic, ethereal in his slenderness, dressed in some long robe of deep color. Then the hand on my back disappeared and the presence was gone. With much renewed energy and cheer, I headed out briskly to retrieve my son, knowing beyond a doubt that I had been visited by a heavenly creature at a time of great need.
A few weeks later, once again so exhausted I was trembling, I began the long, slow walk to the daycare to retrieve my little son. My shoulders were, as usual, entirely caving in towards my chest, that's how tired I was. There, in the middle of the sidewalk, entirely unexpected, I felt two firm, gentle hands grasp my shoulders and pull them gently back and felt the gentle admonishment "stand up straight." I didn't hear it in words, but felt the strengthening, cheering message and felt another tall, slender, floating presence behind me. I did not turn around but I knew it was not the same dark "angel" that had visited me before in my kitchen, but knew it was another heavenly creature that saw a weak person and visited them to comfort and encourage them. I have not had any experiences such as these since, but the memories have lost none of their power and vividness, none of their comforting, cheering, empowering message, and I smile when I think of it and feel joy. I am certain I have been literally touched by angels.
