Vision in the Vortex
by Brian R.

When I first moved to Seattle, I met up with a former coworker of mine from Southern California. I'll call her Lisa. After a few dates, I moved in with Lisa in downtown Seattle, in her small studio apartment. After about five months into a happy relationship, I woke up one night because I was fighting something in a dream. My lucidity grew after a few seconds, and I realized I was actually hitting Lisa as she slept next to me. I was punching her side. She stirred at that moment and began to wake. She managed to mumble something as I apologized profusely, in a panic. Then she promptly rolled over and appeared to forget the whole thing. Just as I turned away from her to go back to sleep, I saw a stunning vision at the foot of our bed.

About three feet above Lisa's feet was some kind of vortex in space. It was like looking into a scene. The image was glowing purple and orange. In the middle sat what appeared to be a man in a sitting meditation pose. He was facing away from me, with his back to me. I could just see the side of his face and I realized he was Asian. The scene was quiet and peaceful and solid - I looked away twice and it was still there. At the same time I tried to wake Lisa, but she was sound asleep. I shook her strongly and she may as well have been dead. Then the apparition began to fade and dissolve and Lisa finally began to wake up. But the image was gone. It lasted for about 15 seconds.

Now here's the weird part. One or two months later, Lisa broke off our relationship because she had the hots for a coworker friend of hers. She had been having lunch with him almost daily and I knew something was going on, but she kept telling me I was being jealous. I was asked to move out and find a place in one weekend, which I promptly did. About three months later, heartbroken and crushed, I finally talked Lisa into meeting me at her apartment to exchange a few items we both had ended up with. I wanted to use the opportunity to mend some things, to see if there was any hope of getting back together (I was a bit naive back then). After 20 minutes of conversation, she turned away from me and sat cross-legged in her walk-in closet doorway - facing away from me. I asked her why she was doing that, and she said it hurt her to look at me.

That was the last time I saw Lisa for about 8 years. I hear she got married about a year after we broke up. Just this last winter, I believe I saw her again -- same coat, same face. This time she looked very worn out and old. And she was very pregnant. Ah, the lessons life tries to teach us. The only thing I can think to say is that I must be some kind of moron if life needs to be that dang obvious in my education.
