Something at the Cabin

Two years ago, we were vacationing in the Hague in the Netherlands. We were going to be staying at this resort for two weeks, and when we got there we had an odd feeling, but could not quite place it. Every night we felt that we were being closed in on, like there were people surrounding the cabin... and watching us. It was very unnerving, but figured we were just being paranoid. Besides, the resort had a gate and no one could come in or go out after 9 p.m. without calling the guard. The neighbors were very quiet and most went to bed between 9:30-10 p.m., so it would always be dark and quiet by 10 p.m., and yet we felt like there were people outside.

Then on the fourth night, we felt scared and edgy starting about 8 p.m., before it was even dark. We just tried to ignore it, but even the kids (aged three and five) were on edge and really seemed to feel something. They followed us everywhere and would only go to bed if we left the lights on and the door open. (Leaving the door open was highly unusual because they would stay up later playing and stuff thinking we couldn't hear them because the door was closed).

Then at 10 p.m. we started hearing footsteps (lots of them and loud) all around outside. We tried to look out, but it was oddly dark and we couldn't see anything, not even on the lit parts of the walking paths, but could hear the shuffling of feet on it! We had the same feeling of being surrounded. Then to our horror we heard tapping and scratching outside the cabin, on the walls, doors and windows. The kids came quickly but quietly out of their room and said they saw some shadows outside their window. Thinking someone was trying to come in and rob us or something, we called security.

They were there within three minutes with flashlights. As soon as we saw the light beams, the noise stopped. They came from both ends of the walking paths and walked around the cabin before coming to the door and reporting that they saw nothing. We asked one of them to stay while we quickly packed a bag and said we would be back tomorrow (in the daylight) to get the rest of our stuff. We were not spending one more night there (even if we had to lose money) and were going to a hotel.

We got in the car and headed toward the city. Then, just at the end of the long, dark, quiet road leading into the resort, I saw something I cannot explain. It was flying and it looked like it had wings, but was not flapping. It was totally black and was the shape of a human. It flew across the sky directly in front of us. I didn't want to say anything for fear of sounding nuts, but my son simply asked, "What was that thing flying there" (pointing to where it was). My husband asked our son, "You saw it too?"

We still talk about it, but haven't been able to come up with explanation.
