Phantom
Reminder
by Karl
My wife and I do not consider ourselves people with money to throw around, so it was with a great deal of reluctance that we decided to have our old house repainted. As long as we were doing it, we decided to get someone with a reputation for good work.
The work went well up to the last when our contractor gave us a bill that seemed far too much for what he had done. My wife gave me the "look" and I decided not to argue with him about the charge. However, I was resentful and angry that he seemed to have taken advantage of us. Some nights I could not sleep when considering how long it was going to take for us to make the money to repay the loan.
Finally, one night while sleeping/dreaming, I heard a vocie say to me, "Do not worry about the bill. The next six months will be the hardest this man will ever have." When my wife asked why I was much less agitated, I told her what I had heard. That was four weeks ago.
I learned two days ago that this man's wife is in the hospital, and may have colon cancer. I would never have wished for such a thing to happen to anyone, and I never asked that it would. I believe that I was told the future so that when it came, I would not be surprised, and also reminded that there are many things more important in life than money.
