Shattering Premonition

My story takes place in the Fall of 1986 in Newark California. Around midnight I was awakened to the sound of our bedroom window being shattered. Just as I was discovering that this was not the case, the phone began to ring.
It was my father calling to tell me that someone had just tried to break into their house. My parents lived in Fremont, about ten miles away.
