The Ghost Looked at Me
by Kevin C.

The following happened to me when I was a young boy in Salinas, CA, in 1969 or 1970. My brother and I shared a bedroom that was at the opposite end of the house from the other two bedrooms. We had a bunk bed. I had the top bunk. On the night in question, I awoke out of a sound sleep. Our bed was in the corner of the room, so that the head of the bed, and the left side, (as you look at the bed from the foot), were against the bedroom walls. When I awoke, I was facing the wall with my back to the bedroom. I sensed that someone was standing in the room. I at first assumed it was my brother who had probably gotten up to go to the bathroom. I really can't remember why I sensed someone standing in the room, but when I realized I could hear my brother breathing deeply in the bed below me, I knew he was asleep. I then became frightened, because who ever was there was trying to be very quiet. I closed my eyes, attempting to act as if I were still asleep.

I then heard who ever was there step towards the bed. I felt this person(?) press down on the edge of the mattress, as if to get leverage to lean over, and look at my face. As you can imagine, I was terrified. I knew that he, she or it was leaning over, looking at me. I couldn't feel a breath, or smell anything, I just KNEW that it was leaning over, peering at my face, and was VERY close to me, as in less than a foot. Finally, (I am not sure how long), the pressure on the mattress eased, and I could hear this person(?) step away. I can't remember actually hearing where it "walked" to, I just got a sense that it was no longer in the room. I waited for what seemed like a very long time, before I got the courage to sprint to my parents' bedroom to have my father check things out.

I assumed someone had broken into our home, had taken whatever they were there for, and had left. My father checked the house out, found nothing amiss, assured me it was simply a nightmare, and sent me back to bed. My parents had always categorized ghosts as being no more possible than werewolves, vampires, or any other imaginary creature, so as a child it never entered my mind that this may have been a ghost. It wasn't until I was much older that I even thought about this experience as possibly being a ghost. I never really bought the nightmare explanation, but since a burglar had apparently been ruled out, and a ghost was not even a consideration at that time, the nightmare explanation was the only thing I was left with. However, I can STILL remember that night, I can STILL remember how terrified I was, and how LONG I was terrified. And I can remember my heart absolutely pounding. And I can still feel that mattress being pressed down, so the nightmare theory holds less and less water for me.
