The Thing
in the River
by Darinel M.
I'm a Chicano who lives in San Diego. I've gone a few times to Mexico, but the second to last time I went with my family in Nayarit (dad's side), and Guadalajara (mom's side) was the strangest. I was visiting my grandma in Nayarit, I was really bored so I decided I would look for a praying mantis. My dad said he saw some by the river, so I went with two of my cousins. On the way there we didn't see any mantids, only cicadas, furry black caterpillars, and termites that form combs. We reached the edge and saw the light brown river. We killed time by looking at dog and bird footprints. Then they said they saw a praying mantis and left telling me to wait there. I agreed and sat by the rocks, I picked a variety of tiny pebbles and started humming a tranquil tune, and throwing the pebbles into the river. Suddenly, I saw a little blackish-blue hump in the water for a second. I stopped to try and remember the tune, then the thing came completely out of the water. I only saw a lizard like thing with a red upper body and blackish-blue lower body. It could have been a salamander, but it squealed - and it was like it said something, something like "thanks." But I was ill all of my vacations after that: Vomiting, and stomach aches. My aunt in Guadalajara said that I could have awakened an animal and it could've gotten mad. I still think that it was something else, not a fish...
