Ghost Dog
by K. Malone

A few weeks ago, my husband and I lost our beloved dog "Nikki" when her leash snapped and she ran into the street and was hit by an auto. The following day, my husband told me he "saw" Nikki twice in the house sitting and looking at him. He said he could see her, but that he could also see through her. I didn't doubt that he thought he saw something, and to be honest I was hoping I might see something also that could in some way give me comfort in knowing that animals have an afterlife also.

After a few weeks and the purchase of a new puppy, I had given up any hope of seeing any sign of my lost angel... then it happened. I had just gotten into bed to go to sleep, and had just turned out my bedside lamp. (My husband was sleeping in the other room because of his back problem.) I heard my new pup rattling some plastic paper in the other bathroom. I reached to flip the light back on so that I could get up and see what the pup was into. Just as my hand reached the lamp, but before I could flip on the light, I felt pressure release from the bed and I heard the "plop" sound of dog paws landing on the floor at the bottom of the bed. I felt a chill - this was exactly the same movement and sound that Nikki always made when leaving my bed for whatever reason at night when she was alive. I quickly turned on the light and saw nothing. However, when I reached for the spot on the bed where the movement had come from, it was warm - very warm - and the rest of the bed cover was cold. I knew then that Nikki had returned to let me know that she was still around.

I have not heard, seen or felt anything since then, but that one moment was comfort enough.
