The Giant Frog
by Floss F.

One hot summer day in 1970, my husband and I took our children to the beach at St. Ambroise, Manitoba. My son Mal was seven years old and my daughter Tanya was nine. It was an hours drive from the city of Winnipeg, Manitoba which was where we lived at that time. From the TransCanada highway, a turn north led the way down a dusty gravel road to the hamlet of St. Ambroise. On the way to the beach, we passed by vast marshland and drove down a tree-lined roadway. A long narrow strip of land had space on either side of the lane for parking and camping. Visitor’s view of the marshland, sandy beach and one of the largest lakes in the country was unobstructed, depending on which side of the road one parked.

On the way home past the marshland that day, my seven year old son piped up in excitement and said, "There’s a frog as big as a dog!" Of course we believed he saw a dog and never gave the incident another thought. But last year, I was reading a book and in the book was a picture of a man with a giant-sized frog seated on the ground beside him. The article stated the frog was the man's pet and it had lived for many years before it died and was greatly mourned by the man. I believe the photo was taken in the 1940s.

When Mal came to visit me, I told him about the giant frog because it was an amazing photo of a frog that size and just as interesting that it had lived to a ripe old age. It looked like it weighed about 70 pounds. My son said, "I told you I saw a frog the size of a dog when we were at the beach in St. Ambroise. You didn‘t believe me but I still remember seeing it."

"I remember you saying that but I didn't believe it was a frog!" I exclaimed. "Where was it when you saw it?" I asked him.

"It was by the side of the road. I looked right down at it," he told me.

I wished I had believed him all those years ago as he was an intelligent child and never one to make up fanciful stories.
