Strange Rain of Insects
by H.L.

This happened at about 2:30 p.m. on May 3, 2004. My daughter and I were sitting outside by the pool at our summer home in Jupiter Beach, Florida when it started to pour down, which is common in Florida in the afternoons because of the humidity. So we went inside to make some lunch. I looked out through the kitchen window and saw these little thin, black, weird stick bugs one by one landing on the ground and moving and crawling. Let me discribe these things that were falling from the sky. It grosses me out still, but they were like lagoon or swamp skeeters, but big with four big legs like a black widow and a cigar-shaped body, three to five inches in diameter and they swam vertically like a reed or something, up and down. Frankly, they looked like something from another planet. It is a very strange and very large bug.

It rained down hundreds upon hundreds of them in the pool where they would swim. They were all over the concrete and were walking around. In the front yard were more of them, and out into the street even more. They are the most disgusting things.

A neighbor told me of how once they had a tadpole rain years back, but this is absolutely bizarre. And no one has ever seen this type of bug; even fishermen who will fish or hunt marsh areas have never ever seen these weird things.

We had a hell of a time getting them out of our pool, and occasionally we will see one from time to time, but what kind of weird skeeter it is is a mystery. My husband has checked books to find out and so far nothing. No one knows this species there might even be the chance that they are from Mexico. Everyone's mystified by this.

We will continue to look for answers but no one as of yet has trapped one nor wants to they are ugly, real ugly and could bite. I'm getting grossed out again.
