Coincidence
or Premonition?
by Dwayne
As a young child, I had always had nightmares. They were frequent and usually repeated themselves. I would have the exact same nightmares for days and weeks at a time, but they were what they were just nightmares. Or so I thought.
After talking with my father, I found out that this incident in particular happened around the age of six. I had been having this nightmare in which I entered a house I had never been to before. I entered through the porch door and walked by myself through the unfamiliar house. After traveling through a hallway and then a kitchen I came to a huge living room with a set of stairs up the side of the wall that led to a single door on a small landing. In my dream, I climb the stairs to the door and just as I reach for the handle it is opened from the other side. As the door swings open I come face to face with a creature or monster. As it grabs me and I wake up. I remember having this dream repeatedly.
Finally, one day while coming back from town with my father he received a call on his pager about a house fire. He was a member of the fire department, and as the house was on our way home, he decided to stop to see if there was anything that he could do. When he parked, he saw an acquaintance who was on a walk with her two girls; one was roughly the same age and the other a little older. Instead of leaving me alone in the car, he asked if she would mind looking after me for a little while. She didn't mind so I went with them to their house which wasn't very far away.
Upon seeing the house, I felt uneasy, but I wasn't sure why. It wasn't until I went into the porch that I realized where I finally was. It was the same porch as in my dream: the same hallway, and I would find out the same big living room with the staircase. You can guess what I expected next. That was all I needed to see. I ran from the house outside and into the yard where the lady finally caught up with me. I couldn't stop crying and I wouldn't go back in the house and waited outside with her and her daughters for awhile until I couldn't stay there anymore and insisted on going to see my dad.
We left and walked back to the fire scene. After finding my father, we left and drove past that house again when my dad noticed smoke coming from a window near the roof. An electrical fire had started in that same room where the monster resided in my dream. Luckily, no one was hurt as the family was still returning from the first fire. A strange set of coincidences? Maybe, but I often wonder what would have happened if I had never had my dream.
