Adventure Behind the Cemetery
by RayNice

In the summer of 1972, when I was 12, my brother Sean, his friend Keith, and I were exploring the woods behind Forest Hills cemetery in Reading, Pennsylvania. We came upon what looked like a mine shaft opening, only it was entirely concrete. It was behind a chain-link fence with a locked gate.

Being curious and daring adventurers, we found a spot to crawl under the fence. We entered the shaft and after walking about a quarter mile, we came to an iron gate. It was locked and chained and had a sign that said: "No Trespassing. U.S. Government." We could find no way under or through the gate, so we decided to return later with bolt cutters. We had insatiable curiosity. We believed trespassing was a crime only if you got caught. We were young.

We walked back out of the shaft and slipped back under the fence. We began to walk through the woods toward the road when we heard a helicopter approaching, and we looked up. It flew lower and closer until it was just over the treetops where we could see its black underbelly. Then we heard noises like rocks hitting the leaves on the forest floor and we could see something hitting the leaves. An amplified voice said, "Leave. You are trespassing." Believing that we were being shot at, we ran out of there as fast as we could.

About three months later, still being curious, we went back to where we saw the concrete shaft. We could not see it or the fence, although we did find impressions in the ground where a fence had been. It looked like the entrance to "whatever" had been filled in and covered over with dirt. To this day, I am not sure exactly what happened. My dad thought that what we heard hitting the leaves may just have been air from the helicopter, not gunfire. He also thought we imagined the spoken message because we were scared. But someone did not want trespassers since they chained the entrance and put up a No Trespassing sign. I still wonder what was in there.
