The Black Camaro
by Joe C.

I've heard of truck drivers seeing "The black dog" as they call it, which is a hallucination when someone is driving at night while tired (they reportedly see a black dog in the road). But I saw something that I cannot explain on a car trip from Tampa Florida up to Boston to visit my sister.

I was driving through Western Virginia (not West Virginia) near Skyline drive trying to catch route eighty which goes through the northern tip of West Virginia on up into Pennsylvania. I was going through a city called Paris Virginia at night (route 17) which had hills and mountains galore throughout it's awesome landscape and wild dips and curves.

I passed a sign that said Paris and began to get a bit weary of the road as I just barely kept my eyes peeled to maneuver the hill, curvy terrain in the dark with my headlights on high. About twenty minutes into it I really began to get tired. As I began to slip a little I suddenly saw right in front of me coming out, a sleek black Camaro pulling out from a side road with no lights on from out of the shadows. I quickly woke to full attention instantly and it was gone with a needed few blinks. I then rolled down the window to wake myself up even more and fished around on the radio for anything to listen to without much luck but just fuzz. I blinked and concentrated on the road the best I could as I went from winding hill to winding hill on and on in the darkness.

I drove on for about twenty more minutes when I started to loose consciousness a little as my eyes crossed and blurring and suddenly there out of the corner of my eye a dark Camaro looked like it was pulling out from a driveway or side street sliding right into my lane as I stirred to full awareness fully freaked out. I jumped to attention as suddenly it was gone completely back into the shadows as I came to full awareness again with my eyes wide as I concentrated fully on the road. I was so tired and there was nowhere to pull off at all until I neared route 80 or so I thought at the time.

The thought kind of spooked me having hallucinated as I just drove on with the window down whistling and blowing in cold mountain air at my ear trying to stay awake (getting nothing on the radio at all). I finally reached route 80 after an hour and a half of route 17 and saw up ahead a well lit truck stop finally. I pulled off relieved and went in to park and take a break for a while. I parked and groggily got out of the car stretching in the cold night air. I slowly went in, made a bathroom run and got a cup of coffee and a couple danishes. I went back out to the car still a bit whipped and got back in taking a few sips as I started up the car feeling ready to complete this trek until I found a motel somewhere.

I needed to get gas and backed out of where I was parked and drove over to the pump under the bright lights. I drove up, got my gas, paying with my card and then got in and drove out to get back on the road again as I then looked beside me. And there in the 2 am mist was a sleek black Camaro beside me, all in what appeared to be smudgy looking primer with some parts of the car looking like it was sanded as part of it still had the glossier black paint on it sheered off in metallic streaks. I looked over to see if he was going to get in front of me or I was going first. I could see that the man's shadowy face through the window was charred like he had been in a fire or had some dirt all over his face. I looked over to him as he then turned his head to me slowly with a weird drugged out looking smirk and shook his head at me saying "no" tauntingly with his mouth as he then pulled out in front of me and went on ahead up the ramp ahead. I followed behind him at a good pace behind him as he drove up to merge in and get back out on the road. I looked at his beat up rear license plate and it was covered in soot or something brackish. The dirty looking car then quickly sped back out onto the highway and then after getting a good pace going at near sixty I got back out there. And when I got out there I looked up the road and to my surprise if not shock there were absolutely no red tail lights at all anywhere out there--none at all. It was all pitch black again ahead of me as I sped up to 65 a bit puzzled at where the Camaro could have gone. It had only been a few seconds or so between us.

I drove on and sipped at my hot coffee thinking he had gone around a hill or something but the road was flat with no curves at all until a few more miles ahead (with no immediate exits at all to the side). The sleek black 80's Camaro had completely disappeared without a trace. As then suddenly in a jolt to my system my staticy radio that I had on low to wake me up came on and the song that was playing was Credence Clearwater Revival's "Don't go around tonight". A weird chill came over me as I listened on at the lyrics yo it.

About forty miles ahead I found a motel and got some rest for the rest of my trip north. Who cares about making good time, it's better to stay alive.
