The Story That Came True
by Michael S.

One day a few years ago, my friends and I were bored because it was the middle of the summer and our parents were at work. I called all the neighbors together to tell them a story that I had made up. I told them that this story was true and had happened in California. I then began the story...

I told them that about 20 years ago in a suburban neighborhood similar to the one we lived in, a young boy about 10-12 years old had disappeared. His parents searched everywhere and after about 12 hours of calling his friends houses only found that his friends hadn't seen from him. They called the police. The police told them that if the boy had been missing for more than 24 hours they would launch a search party. So after the boy had not come home, the parents tried the police again. The police searched everywhere... except the woods at the end of the street. Well, a few weeks later a few neighborhood children went to go for a hike in the woods. They had been walking for about 20 -25 minutes when they saw a picnic table ahead. They kids decided that when they reached the table they'd rest. When they got to the table there was an expensive jewel-encrusted knife covered in dried blood. And next to the knife was the missing boy's cap. The kids were officially freaked out, so they ran all the the way home and told their parents what they had seen. The police were called and searched the woods. They found the table and just a few meters from that they saw a mound of dirt. They dug up the mound to find the boy, disemboweled and already decomposing. The police closed the investigation and the parents buried their son.

That's the story I told my friends, but the freakiest part happened the next week. I told them that the story had really happened in this neighborhood and had happened 30 years ago. So the next day we went for a hike because they wanted to see if I had told the truth. I had never been in the woods before and didn't know that there really was a picnic table in there. When we reached the table, there really was a jewel-encrusted knife. My friend pulled the knife from the table and ran to show our other neighbor, but she dropped the knife and it fell between some rocks in a stonewall. Unfortunately, we could not retrieve the knife and gave up. My neighbors and I were scared so much that I told them the truth - that I had made up the story and had never known about the knife or anything. Scary, huh?
