The Egyptian Ghost
by Douglas T.

I personally believe in ghosts, and always thought there were three types of people: people who don't believe in ghosts, people who believe in ghosts, and finally, people who saw or experienced ghosts. I was formerly the first type of person... until 1983.

While serving in the U.S. Air Force, I was temporarily stationed in Egypt about 1,000 kilometers south of Cairo. It is a small former Soviet airbase before we acquired it. One of my many tasks there involved working in the main power plant, which was all portable and the office was nothing more than some sort of temporary accommodations that was above ground. I worked the midshift operations. While completing my hourly readings and inspections, we had a complete power failure. As this startled me, I simply went back inside to the office and double-checked my system. The power plant's main breaker feeding the entire site tripped open. I called the appropriate people and they began checking to see what caused the huge breaker to trip. There were four additional people doing the expectation, armed with flashlights, who began walking along the huge temporary above-ground power line that basically was heavily insolated line that resembled a large extension cord.

During the day before, someone had broken into our supply shack and stolen a fan. That person was an Egyptian soldier and the Egyptian power plant's power ran on a completely different voltage and requirements. Anyway, the soldier knew this, but having no real idea about electricity went out under the cover of night and cut into the high voltage line, killing him instantly. The four guys found his body burned almost beyond recognition.

The very next day, while I was beginning to fall asleep in my barracks, some pretty strange things began to happen. My sheets from my bead were torn completely from me and with such a force flew across my room. This also happened to everyone else in my barracks. Then came the slamming of doors, turning on and off the lights, radios and such. This caused many who didn't believe to wonder if something was behind all of this. Unfortunately, this caused some duress with some of the troops as they began hearing voices in Egyptian and Russian. There were even some people being put in for a medical transfer out of there. I was relocated to an even further remote location where I began experiencing these voices and strange happenings. Others began seeing the image of the electrocuted man; one person even got so moved by the site that he ran in shear panic in Constantine wire and had to be sent to Germany for medical attention. This sort continued to plague the entire operation. Eventually, it all subsided and there wasn't anything else that happened out of the ordinary there. But this experience opened up my mind and I continued to investigate the possibilities of ghosts.
