The Accident
by Richard B.

I am one of 13 kids 6 boys including myself and 7 girls. My oldest sister had been married for three years. I think I was 10 at the time. One day while over their house visiting with my parents, I asked my sister why her husband never drove their vehicle. Nothing could have prepare for what she was about to tell me next.

It was four years before they met on a rainy Saturday in autumn. He had just left the bar that late that afternoon and got into his '69 Dodge Charger on his way home. While driving fast down a windy road near a residential area, he lost control of his vehicle and flipped it and rolled it several feet before it came to rest just off the side of the road.

About a mile and a half away from the accident, a woman watching TV heard a knock on her door. This was unusual for the woman because she lived alone and didn’t have many visitors accept for an occasional Girl Scout selling cookies or the postman delivering mail. So she was surprised to see a man standing at her door in his late 20s dressed in a red shirt and blue jeans. Cautiously, she opened the door on a crack and said man: "Can I help you?" The man smiled and kindly told the woman that he had an accident a mile and a half up the road and if she wouldn’t mind calling for help. She look at him scanning him with her eyes to see if he was hurt and without asking him so she told him she would call right away and closed the door and sprinted to the phone.

She put a call into the police who told her that they were on route. She went back to the door to tell the man that the police were on there way, but when she returned he had already gone. Feeling concerned she got into her car and drove up the road hope to see him to give him a left back to his car. She drove the first mile and didn’t see any trace of him. Her first inclination was that he had probably been picked up by someone else go in that direction. As she near the accident seen she saw the police cars and the rest of the emergence vehicles already on the seen. She pulled off the road onto the shoulder and looked about for the man that was at her door. But she didn’t see him. She got her car and approached an officer that was directing traffic. She asked him if he knew the whereabouts of the driver of the wrecked vehicle. The officers looked at her strangely and ask if she was a relive. She inquired no and told the officers that he came to home and ash her to call for help. Meanwhile rescuers with metal cutting saws were working in the back ground.

The officer then remove his notepad and asked the woman to describe this man see saw. In the middle of giving her description she watched as the rescue workers pulled the driver’s bloody unconscious body from under the wreck. She screamed as she immediately she recognized the unconscious man as the same man that was at her door asking her to place the call he was even dressed in the same clothing. They had to sedate her and they both were taking away in the ambulance.

Later at the hospital when he came to he remembered nothing about the accident or the woman. He barely remembered pulling out of the bar parking lot. He didn’t believe the story until the officer told the story to him personally. From that day forth until he died 14 years later he never got behind the wheel of another vehicle.
