Missing Dad
by M. Browne

In 1999, my husband and I decided to separate, but agreed not to tell the family so as avoid the usual intrusions. The prospect of divorce was already depressing me quite a bit, when suddenly, my father died of an aortic aneurysm. He died February 2, never knowing I was separating. I left my husband's house on March 13.

After this, the most cruel, somber and deepest depression came upon me. I was dealing with two great losses, but if you ask me, my father's death was the winning reason for it. It's all too familiar: I couldn't get out of bed, work or even go out of the house. Everything looked gloomy, gray, without any sort of dimensional quality; I practically saw the world in black and white. Not a day passed by in which I didn't remember and longed for my kind father.

See, for many years I didn't have a relationship with him. My parents divorced when I was four and living with my mother, she poisoned us against him in such a way that two brothers, two sisters and I hated him and didn't want to see him at all - ever! Thank God for growing up and maturing, because in later years I began to see his actions in a different light and came to understand him. I connected again with him and his last five years tried to get closer to him.

Halloween Night 1999, nine months after his death, knowing that Samhain is the day when the fabric between life and death is thinnest, I told my father in my thoughts, "Dad, come to me in my dreams so that I am not afraid of your presence... and tell me if you are OK". I went to sleep without thinking any more about this and sure enough, he came to me. In a clear environment of mountains and greens, my father was accompanied by others whom I couldn't see clearly. I could only feel their presence. He looked young, good looking and thin. Smiling, he told me that he was happy and at peace.

The morning after, I woke convinced that he actually came to me in that dream. He was obviously concerned that because of his departure, I couldn't go on with my life and wanted to make me feel better. Well, he succeeded. After that apparition I was at peace and started to recover from my depression. Thank you, Dad.
