Missing Time
by J. H.

Before retiring in 1998, I had to travel 30 miles every day to and from work. The route was very isolated and mostly woods. I had specific landmarks that I used to clock my travels. They were about five minutes apart. On more than 30 occasions, I would leave my home town and five minutes into what would normally be a 30-minute drive, I would be five miles out of the town I worked in. According to the dash clock in my truck, I made a 30-minute drive in about 10 minutes, with no memory of the missing 20 miles or the time I should have gone through. This has never been mentioned to anyone outside my family due to my career in law enforcement.
