Mr. Twyford's Ghost
by Ellie

When I was a child, we lived in a semi-rural beach suburb in Australia. In our street, all the neighbours knew each other, and in a quaint picturesque cottage at the end of the street lived an old couple, Mr. and Mrs. Twyford. Mrs. Twyford was totally blind and depended completely on her husband. We kids often saw them walking down the street together arm in arm. Mr. Twyford was very distinctive and easy to recognize as he always wore a long, black coat, a black bowler type hat, which he politely raised to any woman or girl he met on the street, and he had a full white beard.

One night, Mr. Twyford died. The news flew around my school. I was 10 at the time. Everyone wondered how Mrs. Twyford would manage now.

A few weeks passed. I was a solitary child, given to long walks on my own. One afternoon, I was strolling down a sandy, unmade road with grass and trees on either side, when I saw a familiar black-coated, white-bearded figure walking slowly up the road toward me. As kids do, I had forgotten that Mr. Twyford had died, so was totally comfortable to see him walking toward me.

As he drew level with me, looking perfectly normal as in life, I said, "Good afternoon, Mr. Twyford." He didnt reply, but he politely tipped his hat to me as had always been his custom. I walked on in my direction, he in his. It wasn't until I got some way further on that the chilling realisation hit me with clarity.

But Mr. Twyford DIED! I swung around, staring back down the long, sandy road... but it was completely empty.
