Ghosts Three Knocks
by Emmy
This story was told to me some years back when a conversation about ghosts came up at our dinner table one evening.
My mother had been alone at home one evening and had been sitting in the living room watching television. She suddenly heard three sharp knocks against the back door of the kitchen. It was a windy night outside and my mother at first dismissed the sounds as something being blown against the door, and returned to watching the television. A very short time later my mother heard the knocks again, this time very distinct and spaced apart like someone outside was knocking against the door. By now spooked, my mother lowered the volume on the TV and listened for another minute. She then heard the knocks again - louder and almost as if whatever was waiting out the back was getting impatient.
At this stage my mother thought it was a burglar and was too afraid even to pick up the phone to ring somebody... though she never heard any more knocks after that. My father arrived home an hour later to find my mother sitting in her chair, gazing nervously toward the darkened kitchen. My mother told my father about the strange knockings and he took a careful look out into the back garden, but saw nothing. The wind was still blowing strong and like my mother had assumed first, my father dismissed the noises as something blowing against the door... even though there was nothing there for the wind to blow against the door.
Two days later, my mother was discussing the incident with a neighbor two doors down, and watched the neighbor's drain of color. The woman then mentioned that her husband's father had passed away two evenings previously, and whenever her father-in-law had come to visit in the past - that he would always give three sharp knocks on the door to be let in, repeating it a few times to make sure he was being heard.
Coincidence or not, this story has always chilled me to the bone and anyone I ever tell it too.
