Devil at the Door
by Vianey

This happened to my grandmother in Reynosa,TL Mexico back in 1927. My grandmother is now 92 years old, but she still remembers every detail about that night.

She said it started off as a pretty normal night. Her mother had passed away while giving birth to her, so she never new her and always carried a void in her heart for her. Well, this made her extremely lonely and longed for a mother . She thought that her prayers were answered when her father, a field worker, married a local widow that had three girls of her own. She was so wrong. All her stepmother brought her was pain and abuse. She lived up to the name of wicked old stepmother in every sense of the word.

A day for grandma consisted of scrubbing their home clean from top to bottom and dragging the wash to the river every single day while her stepsisters just lounged around and on top of that beat her every time they had a chance. My grandmother loved her father, so in order to spare him anymore grief she suffered in silence. This kept on through the years until that night.

Ater a hard day of chores, my granny had lay down to rest for a while before she had to cook the dinner. Well, this didn't sit well with her oldest sister, who kicked her and told her to stop being such a lazy cow and start dinner. That did it. That was the last straw. Granny mustered all her strength and threw herself at her, knocking her over and started punching her. It wasn't long before her screams summoned the other two and they tried to pry my grandma from off of her. This just angered her even more and she started to curse them in Spanish and screamed that she wished the Devil would take their souls. This scared the girls, but they just laughed nervously and left my granny on the floor, still screaming in anger. She was so angry that she didn't calm down until she kicked a hole clean through her bedroom door that she shared with the girls.

After her father came home, they all went to their room and fell asleep. Around 1 a.m. they were awoken by a light knock on their door. At first my grandma thought she was dreaming, but when she looked around the dark room she could make out the shapes of her sisters sitting up in bed as well. What was that they asked. Did you hear it? My grandma told them to shut up so she could listen, and that is when she heard it again. At first she thought it could be her father or stepmother checking on them, but she could hear them snoring in the bedroom down the hall. For some reason the room seemed unusually dark and cold. My grandma was afraid, but she asked if any one was there. At first there was no answer, but then she heard a voice saying, "It's me. Maria. You summoned me and I have come for what was offered."

This voice made the hair on her arms stand up, and she knew it was not human. Well, this was enough to make all the girls, including my granny, pile up in one bed and start praying. When my grandma peeked at the door, her heart dropped. She remembered and saw the hole that she had kicked earlier. She knew now that whatever was outside could see them if it wanted to. As soon as the thought crossed her mind, a giant eye covered the hole. She screamed for her father and clung to her sisters, still praying.

Then suddenly a gunshot ripped through the air, and she could hear her father praying loudly, screaming with all his might the Lord's name. Then a strong wind ripped through the room and the eye was gone. The bedroom door opened and the girls screamed, but it was only their father. He hugged them all and explained to my granny that he did not understand what he had witnessed. He said that he had heard her scream and had grabbed his shotgun, thinking that a rapist or thief had gotten into the room with his girls.

Now we are Hispanic and have light brown skin. My grandma swears that her father had lost all the color in his face, and he looked as white as a sheet. He had reached the girls' door only to find what he described as a large beast with big eyes blocking his way. Still groggy from sleep, he had shot at it, thinking it was a coyote, but the blast had provided enough light for him to see that this was no coyote.

He had dropped the gun, knowing it was useless and started praying. He said he could hear the girls praying inside the room and knew that if they were to live through the night, that was all that they needed. Her father had prayed with all his might and he said that thing roared in rage and took off violently through the back door that led into the fields.

That morning, all the evidence found to prove their late night visit was that a path had been ripped apart through the sugar cane field and her stepmother's cat was missing. Needless to say, my grandmother's stepsisters left her alone after that and actually became quite close. I think the fact that she had summoned the Devil or his representative proved to much for them. The cat was found several miles down the road about a week later. He was completely bald ... and every inch of his body was covered with long, red scratches.
