Ball Lightning or Something Else?
by Diane

I have a real ball lighting story to tell you about that happened right in my own home when I was younger, which will make you wonder about. It happened when I was around seven years old, living in Wonder Lake, Illinois. That particular day was very stormy. There where tornado warnings, the wind was really whistling through the trees and it was raining something fierce.

My brother, sister and I where watching television when all of a sudden the television blew up in front of us. It really scared us. We went running to mom while she was in the kitchen trying to cook dinner to let her know what happened. We told her the television just blew up. Mom said, "I will take a look outside to see what happened."

When she opened the door, she saw a wire hanging over the house and said I cannot go out because I could get electrified because of the broken wire on the ground. Later on, we saw police who went through the area, and he said over his megaphone: a tornado had hit in the area and wires are laying all over. He then said to "stay in your homes and do not come out until the electric company has restored the electric power and all is safe."

Here is where it gets strange! About a hour and a half later, I went to take a look at the television and something strange came out of it. A white, stark-looking light floated out of it and was coming my way. I ran over to mom and said, "Something is floating our way, and it came out of the television. I don't know what it is."

Mom said, "You are seeing things." I said, "No, I am not, because here it comes!" All of a sudden, mom saw what I had seen. Frightened by the strange light she said, "I don't know what that is. Just get in a huddle in the middle of the room around me and do not try to grab for it."

The ball of lightning or strange light went floating real slowly, like that of a time slowdown, right over our heads, and then proceeded to go into a light in the room we were in, and we could see it going down through the wires and then blow up that light also. We just stood there amazed with wonder. My mom could hear the electrical company and they yelled the lights are on now. Our lights, however, did not go on. We asked what happened and the men said the tornado did some really bad damage down the road away, but just took wires down here. We told them about the weird light and they said it was probably ball lightning.

Later on that day, we took a look at all the lights in the house and had to replace all the plugs and wires to them because they where all blown out. I don't know what that light was or if it really was that of ball lightning. I just hope to never come in contact with something like that again. Now to this very day, whenever I hear anything about ball lighting, it reminds me of that one day's happening.
