The Ghost of Vanderbilj Park
by Trudy van Zyl
The long road... It was said that there was this abandoned house and if you topped about 100 metres from the house and flash your car lights four times, the ghost of Vanderbilj Park will flash back at you. But the flash will be like a flash from hell, and if you look too long, something horrible is bound to happen to you or someone close to you.
Well, I thought it was a load of crap, until this year on the 7th of January (2008) about two hours after midnight, the time I almost lost my best friend. We took an hour drive up to Vereniging (South Africa). We drove up to the creepy old house, even though we stopped 100 metres from the house, we could hear doors cracking and windows screeching. We flashed the lights twice, nothing happened. We flashed them again... twice and waited. Suddenly, someone flashed back or something.
The air was cold as ice, but when that reddish light flashed, we felt an extremely hot wind blowing toward us. The wind was so hot it felt like someone breathing against your neck after they've just drunk hot coffee. It was so freaky that I wanted to scream, but my voice seemed to have disappeared.
It was 01:30 a.m., we were sitting on the hood of the car, then my best friend decided to go closer, much closer. I looked away for a second and she was gone. I found my best friend badly hurt behind a tree that stood in the middle of nowhere, about 20 feet from the abandoned house. She could never tell me what happened. Every time I asked her, she'd start to cry and go sit in her room and lock the door.
After that night, my life has never been the same. Things that could go wrong would, and every day is a struggle, every night I feel that hot wind in my neck, and it's my worst nightmare. One day I will find out what happened to my friend... and so will the world.
