Visits from the Dead
by JP

My dad died December 30th, 2000 at 8:10 a.m. at age 63, less than a month after his doctor told me he had to go in a home. He was a hard drinker since he was 15. After nearly 30 years of doctors telling him to stop drinking he finally did. Or did he? About five days before he died was the last time he knew me and what did he ask for? A high ball! I fixed him some fresh water and ice and asked him if his "high ball" was strong enough and he said it was. I wish sometimes I would have made him one. My mom and dad were divorced about 16 years and she and my step-dad stayed with him just about all of his last month. The last person my dad remembered was my step-dad; they had known each other for about 40 years. The reason I asked if he has stopped drinking is because two days before he died he was "visited" by his mom and dad, both long dead. He spoke to them and when I asked if they were still alive he looked at me like I was nuts and he said no. The look he gave me was that he knew I knew better. God's will made him die alone one of the few times that month he was alone. His eyes were opened, his head was looking at his twin grandson's many pictures that were on that wall. So, has he stopped drinking? I don't think so. And you know what, I'm glad of it. There is life after death. I know believe.
