Red-Eyed Robot

This incident happened when I was between 9 and 10 years old. To this day, I still don't have any explanations as to what this was.

My parents and I were in the Dominican Republic and went hiking in Puerto Plata. We also traveled with my dad's war buddy and his kids. The adults were walking at a much faster pace than my friend Josephine and me, so we were a little behind them, I would have to guess about 30 feet behind.

As we were walking, I noticed that to the left of us and about 10 feet ahead, was a small robot standing next to a tree. He was waving at us with his arm, which was at a 90-degree angle. I found it odd that this tourist attraction would be in the middle of nowhere. As we got a little closer, we heard the clicking sound every time it waved. It had big round red eyes! It never moved; it just kept waving. I found it very odd that the adults seemed to simply ignore it. (Today, I wonder if they even saw it.) As we were getting closer to the thing, I said to Josephine, "Look at that! Let's go touch it!" She being the chicken that she's always been said, "No!" She started to cry and ran away. I continued to walk, but I was so angry with her that I couldn't see straight. Anyway, as I passed the tree, I looked behind me and the robot was gone!

Can any body tell be what this was? I really do need closure with this since even my husband is befuddled about this whole episode.
