In the spring of 1987, at the age of 25, I was driving home alone from a date. While turning onto my street, I remembered that my dad was returning home from a three-day trip to Atlantic City. At that time I had a weird sensation that something was wrong. Being only 50 yards from my home, I quickly scaned my driveway and house. I did not notice anything out of the ordinary, reassuring myself that nothing was wrong (such as a relative's car in front of my house).
Suddenly, I heard a voice of female gender clearly stating, "Your father – he had a heart attack."
Being alone in the car, I repeated, "A heart attack?"
The voice was heard again: "He's dead."
Amazingly,
I was not frightened and actually felt calm in addition to being quite puzzled.
I parked my car in front of my house and entered through my front door. My mom,
who was sitting on the living room couch, announced that
"Your father had a heart attack." I responded, "I know... He's
dead."
My mom, who was a bit surprised by my statement, informed me that the hospital had just called stating that my father had a heart attack at the local airport and was being treated in the emergency room at a local hospital. I immediately called the hospital emergency room and spoke with the ER physician. (Of note, I was a medical student at that time and currently an internist.) The ER physician explained that my dad had indeed collasped from a heart attack at the airport. He was in resistant ventricular fibrillation for a period of time eventually converting to a normal rhythm after repeated cardioversion attempts. He was unresponsive but, however, alive!
During my drive to the hospital ER, I was trying to make sense of the voice that I had heard. It soon was to become clear. When I arrived at that hospital, I discovered that my dad had sustained oxygen deprivation to his brain. The doctor explained that in 24 hours we would know for sure whether irreversible brain damage had occurred. Unfortunately, I knew then that his consciousness would not return. He died six weeks later never regaining consciousness. An EEG later performed by a neurologist had revealed only basic vegatative functions present.
I am convinced that whoever made contact with me that evening was trying to ease that impact of learning of my dad'd death. The female gender of the voice also suggests that it was someone other than my dad who contacted me. Also, I did not "read" my mom's mind because she was not aware of his "death" and believed he was being treated successfully in the hospital ER. This experience provided myself with proof of some type of existence after mortal life. Of note, I did not have any similar experiences prior to this event or since.
