Ghost at the U.N.
by Jon B.

Back in the late 1960s my mother worked at the U.N. in New York as a secretary in an adjacent building that was part of the larger complex. She worked in an area that was once part of a large conference hall, but was later divided up to make room for offices and now only a small portion of it was a conference room with two large double doors that led into the large conference space.

One night, while working late all alone, she began to hear a low sound of the clinking of glasses, like a cocktail party, but very faint and seemed to come from behind the large double doors. The hallway leading up to the conference room was dark, and there were no planned parties. Although cocktail parties were commonplace, there would have never been one in the conference hall, and certainly none if all the hall lights to the main doors were dim.

She soon went back to work finishing up for a few more minutes when she then heard a rush of applause like a full room was applauding at a speech from down the hall toward the two large doors, like it was coming through the auditorium walls. Then just faded.

She said she got up and went down the hall convinced that there might actually be something going on in there. So she went over to the double doors and tried to open them, but they were locked. Then she said she heard applauding again from behind her, but faint and thought she knew exactly what it was there was an audio monitor that they sometimes used to listen in on speeches.

So she walked over to the monitor in an office, she checked it and found that it was completely off. Then once again from the double doors she heard a cocktail party again but louder, the clinking of glasses and laughing voices and occasional applause. All coming through the walls.

She called down to security and had them come up to check it out. So after a few minutes the security guy came up checked the door opened it and went into the conference room to see if there was someone in there possibly. The room was empty and the sound system was off.

So she got her stuff together and went to head out of the area of the building in which she worked. And upon passing through the glass doors that led to the elevators she looked back to the very office in which she was working and noticed the door was slowly opening, she then stopped to take a second look at her office door and then the door closed all by itself until shut. The elevator door opened and she got on.

She said she only worked there a few weeks more before getting another job.
