The
Three Chords
by Jenna
I was eight years old when I first experienced an unexplained episode in my home. I remember being tucked into bed and drifting off to sleep, a time when weird thoughts and premonitions occasionally occur. I remember hearing the piano play three very complex chords (ones which would require all 10 fingers to play) on the lower end of the piano, very similar to what one would hear in a scary movie. I woke up immediately in fright wondering who could have played the piano like that. Only my mom and I could play in our home and I could never remember my mom playing in that fashion before. I waited for about three minutes to hear if it was going to occur again, then gave up thinking that it was just my imagination playing tricks on me.
My parents had been watching television in the basement at the time (the piano was upstairs) and my brother who was only four was asleep in his bed. Even our only pet, our cat, was in the basement with my parents. My parents had heard the strange chords too and after five minutes (I only suppose they were listening for more sounds too) came up to check on my brother and myself. After waking both my brother and myself up fully and accusing me of playing the piano did I realize that this was not my imagination -- something really had caused the piano to play. Needless to say, I slept with my folks that night.
My mom later told me when I was a teenager that she did not take the experience very seriously. She believed it was my great grandfather who was always a practical joker and was also a piano tuner for the likes of Liberace and Victor Borge. He had died when my mom was still a child. I didn't think it was funny!
