Invisible
Carolers
by Polin
It was around Christmas in 1986 and I was about 10 years old. My cousin, who lived in another city, would always come visit during the holiday season. One particular evening, we were home alone hanging out in my room. We lived in a neighborhood where are the neighbors knew each other and had children our age that we would play with.
On this evening, we started to hear what we thought were the neighbors out singing Christmas carols. The sound of the singing was getting louder and louder as, I assumed, the carolers approached our house. In fact, they were singing my favorite Christmas song, "Do You Hear What I Hear." Interested to see, my cousin and I dashed to the window and started to look out into the dark night. What we saw, or should I say, didn't see was beyond words.
Although the singing continued to get louder, there was no one outside! We went to other windows in the house to see better, but still there was no one in sight. I remember looking at my cousin and noticing her face had gone pale with fear. Without a word, we just stared at each other in disbelief. Again we looked out, yet saw nothing. The eerie singing of "Do You Hear What I Hear" slowly began to fade, as if the invisible carolers were walking past our house. It sounded like at least 10 people singing!
My cousin and I quickly closed the drapes and embraced each other in fear. I kept telling her there had to be a logical explanation for what we heard, but there was not. No radio, TV or other devices were on in our house. Later, we asked some of the neighbors if they were playing Christmas carols that evening. They quickly confirmed our fear that something sinister was going on when they said no. To this day, my cousin and I shudder with fear when we talk about that particularly ghastly incident. Needless to say, the song is no longer a favorite of mine.
