I Felt a Shadow Person
by En Vee

It was in 1977 when this happened to me, but I still clearly recall everything I saw, felt and thought. When I was six, I lived in an early 1900s colonial house in New Zealand, and shared a bedroom with my older sister. She was a little scared of the dark and often woke me up to turn the hallway lights on if she needed to use the bathroom during the night. I, on the other hand, only ever put one light on for myself, as I was never particularly scared of the dark.

This one night I woke up and got up to make my way to the bathroom at the other end of the house. I went down the hallway to the dining room, which was the one light I always turned on. In the dark, I put my arm through the doorway to feel for the dining room light switch around on the wall. My hand settled on something damp, something that felt like cloth.

I jumped back, seeing in the near darkness something dark move away from the cream painted wall. I shot back into my room and hid under the bed covers, thinking whatever it was wouldn't follow me because my sister was in the room with me. After a while I had this overwhelming feeling that whatever it was there in the doorway. I pulled the sheets down to my nose, but there was nothing in the doorway. Seconds later, a black shape appeared, and stayed there. I couldn't move or shout. All I could do was stare at it and hope it didn't come in, still hoping that my sister being in the room was a deterrent.

I don't know how long the shape stayed there, maybe only seconds, but eventually it disappeared. I remember staring at the doorway for a long long time afterward, my heart pounding loudly in the fear that it might return, but it never did. I never saw it again, and never told my sister about what had happened. I did tell my mum, who said I must have been sleep walking. I knew then that I wasn't and I still know it now.
