Giant Flies

In Michigan when I was about ten years old, roughly the summer of 1971, my best friend, also ten, and I along with my younger brother who was about eight at the time, were playing in our backyard. It was very hot that day I remember. We remarked that we could fry an egg on the sidewalk.

All of a sudden, we heard this loud buzzing. About 12 feet away on the gate of our yard landed two huge flies! They looked just like regular house flies, but they were at least a foot across, both of them. We were absolutely stunned and terrified, of course... we were actually afraid to move to go and get someone to witness these huge flies. We did whisper to one another, but were too scared to move.

The flies stayed on the gate for what seemed like a long time, but was actually only about 10 minutes. Then they both flew away with very loud buzzing. My brother and friend and I ran into the house and told my parents, who of course thought we were just telling a story. To this day I still wonder about those monstrous flies.
