White Cat's Ghost
by Pat Pfeffer

I sang professionally for a number of years and my accompanist was a young talented senior in high school who is now successfully practicing his craft in New York City. For convenience sake we would often practice in the living room of his parents' home. We frequently had an audience of whoever happened to be around at the time of practice, but at no time did I notice that there were any animals in the house.

One day while we were working alone I noticed this beautiful, long haired, black and white cat strolling around the room. During a break in the rehearsal I asked Dennis when they had acquired the cat. Dennis looked very puzzled and said, "We don't have one." I was stunned, for the cat was in the room big as life. When I described the cat to him, Dennis confirmed that had been his cat who had been killed in the street a couple of years ago. I commented that although he was gone in the flesh he certainly was here in the spirit.

During the ensueing years his parents were deceased and the house was sold. Two years ago, Dennis was honored by being inducted into his High School Hall of Fame. The folks that had purchased the house invited him to stay in his old bedroom while he was here in town. Next time I speak with him I'll have to ask if the cat was still there, waiting for him.
