Helen's
Spirit
by Alex Briones
About a year ago, my boyfriend and I were two 16 and 17 year-olds with nothing to do on a Friday night. We began driving aimlessly around when we headed out of town in a direction I had never been before. A bit into the drive, I began experiencing what I can only describe as premonitions in the form or road directions. I would see us turning, going down certain roads, or passing specific cars or road signs before we would actually come upon them.
During these "visions," as one might call them, my boyfriend was unable to get a response from me, as if I was in a trance. I followed the directions being given until we came upon a sign for a forgotten cemetery on an old dark road. I had the strangest sensation that I knew exactly where I was going. My destination turned out to be a tombstone for a woman by the name of Helen. I felt an urge to pray for her soul and ask God to accept her into his arms. As I attempted to do this, a pinwheel on a child's grave began to spin rapidly. There was absolutely no wind on the particularly hot night. I politely and somewhat jokingly asked the child to stop spinning the toy so I could concentrate on my prayers. To my shock, the pinwheel stopped spinning abruptly.
I said my prayers and as I finished, I heard the clear, beautiful ringing of a nearby bell maybe 10 feet away from us. I felt it was a sign that I had done my job. Before I left, I thanked the child for his/her cooperation and asked for him to continue with his pinwheel if he wished. Just as I said that, the pinwheel began spinning rapidly once more.
We were getting into the car when a shadow seemed to come over the moonlit cemetery. A feeling of cold dread came over me and I had the urgent feeling that we needed to leave. The peaceful little cemetery no longer had a welcoming feel. My boyfriend was quite spooked by now and tried to get out of there as quickly as possible, but every time he hit the gas, the car struggled to go over 5 mph. It was as if something was holding us back from leaving. The motor was straining and the tires were spinning in the gravel. I was afraid to turn around and face what had ahold on the car.
Suddenly, I felt a peaceful presence coming from the front of the car. The car gave a sudden lurch as if it was pulled out of the grip of whatever was holding us back. Needless to say, we sped out of there at top speeds. On the way home, my boyfriend asked me how I had known about the cemetery hidden out on that lonely road. I told him there had been a sign pointing to it from the main highway. I was surprised to hear that he had seen no such sign and was convinced it did not exist.
To this day, I believe Helen reached out to me for help escaping whatever held us back at the cemetery. I believe it was she that saved us from the evil there and that she is now happy.
