Shadow
Being Scared Birds
by Winkelstein
This story happened to a good friend of mine back in 1986. His name is Connor and he was traveling Brazil with four other friends. In February they arrived in the town of Recife and they wanted to stay there for a few days. It was carnival season and each and every hotel was booked out. After searching for hours for accommodations, they ended up in a rather seedy part of town. They walked into a cheap-looking hotel and asked for rooms. The receptionist said he was sorry they were booked out but when Connor and his friends offered the guy some U.S. dollars he, though reluctantly, said there was one room they could have. They accepted this offer immediately. The hotel staff had to put up some beds in this room because usually it stood empty.
In the hallway outside that room, there was a big birdcage with exotic Brazilian birds. Connor and his friends had something to eat and then went back to the hotel. Soon after midnight, everybody was asleep and everything was quiet. Suddenly Connor woke up. The birds in the cage outside had woken him up, they were screeching and fluttering and sounded as if their were in a real panic. Connor looked at his alarm clock; it was 3 a.m. and he thought that maybe a cat had frightened the birds in the hallway, and he hoped they would stop making so much noise. Which they did.
Connor relaxed and was just about to close his eyes and go to sleep again when the door to the room opened and somebody came in. He said he immediately felt a fear he never had felt before in his life. He describes what he saw as follows: it was a shape, an outline of a human being, but when you looked at it it looked kind of blurry, like running water (if that makes any sense). And still he could sense that this apparition was a female in her late 20s. She entered the room, seemed to pause and then sat down at the foot of his bed.
He said he started to pray to God to make it go away and that he said inside his head, "Go away, go away"... and after what must have felt like hours she got up and left the room. The birds in the cage in the hallway woke up again and made a hell of a lot of noise and got quiet again after a few seconds. Connor woke up his friends and told them what happened. He was so visibly shocked and one of the other guys had heard the birds go crazy, too, that the others believed his story. The next day they asked the receptionist about the room and if they could get a different one. The guy just said no and if they didn't like it they had to stay at some other place. They left and were lucky to find another hotel. To this day they wonder what happened to that woman in that seedy place and if she wanted to tell them something.
