Top Hat Spectre

Before I begin the story, I just want to say I heard a lot of "children" who have experienced similar if not the same encounters of "the man in the top hat". It was around the late 1990s in New England and I was almost ten years old. It was late at night and everyone in the house had fallen asleep. I quickly woke up upon hearing footsteps coming from my unfinished basement. The door was slightly opened and I could see the basement door from where I was lying down. I shut my eyes to see if what I was hearing was just a dream, and as soon as I opened them, there he was! The man in the top hat!
I didn't have any reaction to scream or even move! I just lay there staring up at him, gripping my blanket as tight as I could, hoping that he would disappear. His appearance was very awkward. He had no facial features, but just a blank, dark face. It was as if it were a "ghostly" figure. He came from the basement door, floating close to where I was sleeping and just stayed about three feet away from my bed. He was very tall, about six feet, and wore a long, black trench coat and a tall black top hat. He had very broad shoulders. I will never forget this encounter since it was the only one I had ever had in my life! It sounds crazy when I tell people who never heard of him, but it's common to many . The answer is still unknown why the man in the top hat makes himself known at night to many children and seems so unreal!
