Encounter with a Djin
by Shameela Abraham

I live in East London, South Africa. I have always been fascinated with the paranormal, supernatural... anything and everything that I could come across. A few years ago I got really involved in Tarot cards (2005) and from there, well, I started exploring other forms of divination. This path led me into the world of Wicca. I am born of Muslim origin and new these beliefs of mine are most definitely not accepted in our culture and tradition.

Anyway, back to my experience.... A friend and I (after months of research) decided on invoking the powers that be. We followed the process of casting a circle, cleansing and consecrating the tools used, and then invoking the elements. We were just about ready to begin at midnight (the time was really unplanned). We had written our own verses earlier on in the evening to make the experience more personal; however, we followed the kabbalistic approach.

Now... what was really strange... the temperature in the room dropped immensely and it was mid-summer and not cold at all! When everything was over and we had closed the circle, the temperature rose immediately. It was so sudden that it was not normal to go unnoticed. This was done at my apartment and the following evening, at midnight, I woke, completely horrified to find the salt bowl that I kept on my altar floating in mid-air. At first I thought I was dreaming, but soon realized that I was wide awake but in a trance state.

The following evening, I encountered a vision of sorts. Now, I know I might sound totally wacked, but I am quite sane at this particular moment. I was asleep, but I woke up and not realizing until later the next day, I had somehow slipped into the same state of the previous night. A THING or face appeared before me: beautiful, extremely handsome and pretty at the same time. I stared into the eyes and moved closer... and it changed shape. The next moment I found myself screaming because what I saw was some hideous creature.

Thankfully, I was not harmed in any way, but definitely shaken. I tried figuring all of these weird things out and a week later, while in conversation with my friend, we came to realize that what I saw might have been a Djin. I am a fire sign and my elemental being is a salamander with the highest entity being a Djin. Now, Djins are also shape-shifters, and from Islamic beliefs and my own research, they rule the fire signs and, well, from teachings in the Quraan are made of fire. The salt bowl that floated -- at least what I saw -- symbolizes the spirit. In a pentacle, the spirit element is usually represented by salt. Well, that's where I always place it. Tying all of this up, I am a fire sign, my elemental being is the Djin, which I think I saw, and salt represents the spirit...and that was floating around.

I still don't know if there was any message from my experience because I have not cast any circles since then. I was a bit worried of the consequences. I have, however, lit lots of white candles and sprinkled salt water around my apartment in case any unwanted beings might get comfy. Ok... so this is my experience... I don't really know if it makes much sense, but I would appreciate some insight if you could.
